Why documentary photography is good for your family

What is it that makes documentary photography so good for your family?

When most people think of family photography it is more often a family portrait that comes to mind. The photograph for the wall where everyone is stood facing the camera and smiling. However does this really reflect what your family is like? Do the kids all smile at the same time? Do they all stand around posing? Possibly not.

If all you had where photographs of perfect scenes what would your memories conjure up in years to come? Would it be of photography sessions or how life really was?

I had a wonderful photography session with a family just recently who understood how important documentary photography was. They knew that their kids were active and full of imagination. They knew that a photograph of them just stood around facing the camera would be wrong. It wouldn’t reflect who they really were.

Check out some of the photographs as we played hide and seek, with a twist. The ‘twist’ it was something that I sometimes do on sessions. I gave the kids a camera. The game was hide and seek but you had to find people by looking through the camera and then taking a photo of them.

Imagination is a part of growing up

That area of make believe is what makes us who we are. It starts as we grow up with the games we make up or even that imaginary friend. This should be something we hinder. It should be something that we embrace.

Yes, you may be a bit older now but I bet you still have that imagination somewhere. Perhaps it’s not dragons or talking mice any more. As we grow up it is more a hope for the future.

At an early age we should encourage this imagination. Let you children see that you love them for their imagination.

It is always good to tell your children you love them. How would it be though if they could see how proud you are of them by seeing photos of them around the house.

Not photos of the ‘perfect family’ all sat posed saying cheese at the camera. Photos of them playing. photos of them enjoying their childhood.
